View Full Version : Make your 650 say 'Scotty, Beam Me Up!" wav ringtone!

aarons12

Hi all. some of you 'oldies' may recall that i did some ringtones for the treo300 and 600. they also work on the 650, in case any of you have them.

but of course, the 650 can do more, so check out this 'Scotty, Beam me up!' ringtone. it's a 19.2k wav file, and right now i'm just messing around with it but it sounds cool.

for some reason this would not set as a ringtone for a particular caller from one of the phone screen 'one touch' buttons. but in sound prefs, it worked fine, and i have it set as my 'unknown caller' tone.

for newbies, the idea is you put this address in blazer on your phone. it can also be downloaded from your PC to a memory card, and moved from there.

w00t!!!!! Now, do they have to be installed on the phone directly, or can it be on the card?

aarons12

i'm not sure about that since i don't have a card (yet... going to best buy tonight to pick up harry potter movie and a card). i would not be surprised to find that they need to be on the phone, and that someone will come up with 3rd party software that will solve the issue.

i may make some more of these for my own amusement, and of course people will make their own since we all have tons of mp3 and wav files on our computers, but i have thought about it and i will not be making these for my ringtone sets for sale at handango because i would be concerned about licensing issues. a little beeping midi file is one thing, but actual voice and/or music...

aarons12

yeah, i suspect that's another thing for some enterprising 3rd party... offhand i don't know why it wouldn't work but it may be some function of the larger file size or something...

we need a site with a bunch of celeb clips for ringers, such as:

-Star Trek: Bones, Sulu, Uhura
- Star Wars: Yoda
- Jessica Simpson - "Is this chicken or tuna?"
- Pulp Fiction soundtrack

aarons12
11/23/2004, 11:19 AM
yeah, there are tons of clips out there, basically because now we can use windows sound files, which were always small wav files. so all those cool sounds we used to have for our windows actions can be used as ringers and other sounds. i just thought it would be fun to put one up.

i'm sure lots of folks will put them up at their web sites. should be cool!

there is another thread on here that indicates lightwav works just fine on the 650, though i don't know if there are features they would need or want to add to make the most use of the 650's setup...

yeah yeah
11/23/2004, 02:03 PM
how do you install the wavs?

aarons12
11/23/2004, 02:26 PM
easiest way is to go to the web on your treo, and either get to this page and click on the links above or type those links into blazer. be sure to spell them and capitalize exactly as shown (i did not realize that the treo is case sensitive)

when they start to download, a screen will pop up on the treo. save them as sounds. the other way is to copy them to your SD card, and then move them to the main memory using a file management utility.

once they are on the phone, they will just show up in your list of available tones in the prefs/sounds screen

the only way i actually know how to get them on is downloading them from the links i supplied. the other way i SUSPECT it can be done is copying them to your SD card then using a file manager program to move them to the phone's regular memory i don't think they will work from the card directly.

but i have not yet worked with any of the ringtone managers such as pocketunes or lightwav so i can't help there... i'm sure it will come out on here soon enough

well, i guess folks will post solutions. i'm sort of new at this with the 650 because i never had a 600, just the 300 and that required a whole different format yet again (pdb). i've been playing the wav files for folks all day just for giggles...

the 650 speaker is waaay better than the 300, that's for sure. don't know how it compares to the 600

i don't know what the max size is for wav files but that would only apply to them as ringtones, and (at least on the 300) the file size alone would not prevent it from showing up on the list, you would have just gotten an error message or a reset when you tried to play it.

in particular i don't think there's a limit on file size other than your available memory because the treo650 can function as an mp3 player also, and can use mp3's as ringtones. so again, you would not use the same files for both purposes but if you put them into the phone's internal memory, the full songs might still show up on the ringtone list.

or not

like i said, i'm making guesses at some of this. i'm a gadget geek and into music, but i'm not a software developer or palm coder

that was posted in some of the early talk on here. someone had posted a link to part of the manual or something. i will be playing with it soon, but if it can use wav, would be surprised if it can't use mp3. mp3 was the first one to be used by other phones. i was surprised at the wav thing because that's not really a 'compressed' format, where mp3 is.

yes, they are working right now (except for the speed dial buttons, which don't seem to show them for some reason) and for others too-read the posts.

i just navigated to the links shown in this thread (links to the files at my own website) when you put those addresses in or click on those links, it will start to download the file and ask if you want to save it as a file or a sound. choose sound, it saves it (first asks what you want to name it, i just picked OK to leave it as it was) and then started using it. really couldn't be easier...

make sure you use the exact spelling and CASES on the links. and again, save as a sound. i have been showing it off all over, people think it's a riot.

I beam them over using the Wireless Link on my laptop. This is the easiest way to install them IMO. It takes a little messing to get the PC to see the Treo as a connected device but works great. Hint: Do a beam to the PC to wake up the IR port. Then add the WAV files to the Send to list. Now beam again to the PC and then interrupt it. Then hit the send button on the PC - voila.

this is NOT true, correct. it IS possible that when you download the file, and the treo asks if you want to save it as a sound file, it does it's own conversion, i don't know, but if you click on those links, choose 'sound' when it asks, it should show up in your sound files.

when you download to the treo, is it starting to download at all? or do you seem to succeed at downloading it, but it's not showing up on your treo? if it's not downloading at all, double check your spelling and CASE. blazer seems to be case sensitive. i was having that trouble myself because i'm not used to having to capitalize web links.

if you ARE getting the download to start, make sure you are selecting 'save as sound'

Yeah, I get a click at the end of playing a .wav file that's been imported into sounds. Don't know what to do about it. I assume it's the built-in player itself or maybe the speaker? Anyone else have any idea what may be going on or how to fix it?

Hi everyone. I have tried setting up wave files as ring tones with no success. They appeared on my 650 ringer list but did not play after I choose the wave file and received a call. Anyway, I found a solution that worked for me. I used the "Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0" program and was able to convert my wave files to .amr files. I emailed the files to myself and saved them to the 650 and they worked perfectly!! Sound quality is excellent and the program couldn't be easier to use.

Absolutely not true. Although you are right the documentation doesn't mention waves you can do this. I can send a wave file to my 650 via bluetooth and it gets added to the sound manager just fine.

Note that not all wave formats might be supported. I expect there are probably some limitations on sampling rates and sizes. I'm sent clips that are mono, 8 bits, at both 8KHz and 11KHz rates and they work fine. I know that you can't send the waves via hotsync. I don't know if this works via downloading or email, but it definitely works when sending a file via bluetooth.

Like others, I can record a sound in sound manager, but the treo won't allow me to hear it as a dedicated ring on a favorites button. For instance, if I record my daughter saying, "dad, pick up the phone", it will allow this new "ring" to be the default ring, but it won't allow me to hear it if I select it to ring for just my daughter calling me on the favorites button. If someone else is getting this to work, I would be very appreciative of step by step instructions.

There is either a bug or limitation in that you can't seem to get individual ringer tones to work in the favorites except for midi ringtones. AMR, WAV, and QCP ringtones which will work for the defaults, don't play if set for an individual. It would be nice to know from P1 if this is a limitation or bug but there is no mention either way.

One would THINK so, and even Palm's web site advertises this as a feature:

http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=obj(19349)

Add AMR ringtones

The Treo 650 smartphone uses two formats for ringtones: AMR and MIDI. This section talks about AMR, which is best suited for voice clips rather than music.

AMR ringtones are recorded using your Treo 650 smartphone's built-in voice recorder. It's an ideal way to add alerts like "Hey, Larry's Calling!" or "You have an appointment" to your repertoire...

But, as many here have found... it doesn't WORK that way! Our alert selections for that speed dial person are ignored in favor of the "known caller" alert.

It's got to be a bug. Now, how do we report it?

I've confirmed that the following works well for me - I'm using a Treo 650 with a Mac running OS 10.3.7 w/Bluetooth, and I do have PocketTunes installed.

Download WAV file to desktop
Connect Treo to Mac via Bluetooth (if you don't know how to do this, read the manual)
"Send File" via Bluetooth from the Mac to the Treo
"Save" the file on the Treo to the "Sounds" folder
Select the saved sound for your ringtone

I've also confirmed that it ONLY works for the known caller tone (possibly the other "standard" tones...?) - not for "Favorites" tones, which can be custom selected.

Haven't found a Mac AMR conversion program to see if a converted file will work as a "Favorite" sound...

Cool, though.

It doesn't have anything to do with finding a Mac AMR conversion program. The limitation of not being able to use AMR's as a "Favorite" sound is a bug on the device itself. (Otherwise we'd be able to do so with AMR's that we record of our voice, directly on the Treo 650. In Sound & Alerts pref, you can "add" sounds, which are voice AMR recordings. The only problem is these AMRs don't work as customized/favorite ring tones.)

That said, QuickTime Pro is supposed to allow for AMR/3GP exports. Once the sounds are on the Treo, we'll have to wait for PalmOne to address this bug, and *then* maybe it will work the way PalmOne says it should:

Rather than fixing this bug, PalmOne has just added this caveat:

http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=obj(19349)

Voice recorder ringtones do not work as Caller ID Ringtones
Please note, you cannot assign voice recorder ringtones to Favorites as Caller ID Ringtones. If you do assign a voice recorder ringtone, you will hear the Default ringtone whenever that person calls you.

They also changed the suggested recording from "Hey, Larry's Calling!" to "Larry, pick up the phone!"

That's not what it said when I bought the phone. And the UI still allows these recordings to be chosen, they just DON'T WORK when they're supposed to.

So PalmOne just changes the technote to imply it's not possible? How about FIXING it instead, PalmOne?

What kind of file management utility can you use to transfer the files? What can you use to just play the wav's off your Treo 650 or is that not possible? I tried RealAudio-wouldn't play them. Can I put something else on it?

What is a SIMPLE way to convert files to Midi?
