The reason I am putting this here is to ask everyone here what they want or what they are hoping the next Treo to have? I would like to have:

Either windows OS or a multi-tasking Palm OS
PTT
Wi-Fi
GPS
Bigger Screen
Sliding keyboard
better camera

Another "What do you want in the Treo 700!" thread.....

Are you in any sort of position to take these suggestions to Palm and/or HTC's engineering departments?

1. EVDO (faster internet is a must!)
2. BT 1.2 (or better)
3. Better Camera (at least 1.3MP)
4. Longer Lasting Battery
5. Linux :D

1. Palm OS preferred
2. Larger screen (although i doubt it will happen)
3. More control over phone variables to lessen the need for 3rd party apps.
4. Direct Access to the SD card through the cradle (without a 3rd party app)
5. Wifi bult in or through an addon sd card.
6. Minimum of 48MB free memory.

Most importantly imo I hope the next gen Treo supports 1xEvDo/UMTs. I also would like it to be Cobalt based device with 1 GB Nand chip with 64 MB NVFS (similar to the T%). In addition: BT 1.2, wifi card compatible and a better browser than blazer..

Ditto to Insertion's idea...

Here's something that's really puzzling to me. Why do some people insist so much on built in Wi-Fi? What does Wi-Fi have that Sprint, Cingular, Verizon doesn't??

A few years ago, Wi-Fi technology was soooooooo heavily hyped up. I had delusions there would be free Wi-Fi connection everywhere and anytime. This was also a reason why I had previously purchased a Tungsten C for its Wi-Fi feature.

I tried in vain desperation to log onto whatever free Wi-Fi was available a few years ago with my Tungsten C. Pretty much the only thing I got was the home page of McDonalds, Starbucks, and the Hyatt Regency. The home page always requested for a password, which of course I had none. I asked a McDonalds cashier one day for a Wi-Fi password, and the crew scratched their heads for 5 minutes and finally came back to give me a Wi-Fi password coupon. D@mn coupon didn't work worth beans! Then I tried asking a Starbucks cashier for a password, and was told to sign up with T-Mobile for $40.00 monthly subscription! Forget it!! The Hyatt Regency hotel wanted to charge me hundreds for a room to give me a password...don't think so!

The first time I actually logged onto the internet with Wi-Fi was at a local (non-Startucks) coffee shop. I almost fell over my chair over the amazement that Wi-Fi actually worked for the first time on my Tungsten C !! Granted, I had to pay a couple dollars for a cup of coffee, but hey, the darn thing worked! However, as soon as I walked 5 feet out the door, I immediately lost my Wi-Fi internet connection...that really sucked! I wasn't going to keep caffeinating my body at the cafe simply to log onto the internet there. I was so amazed, that I even tried surfing p@rn videos on my Tungsten C, but the whole darn thing froze and crashed and I had to do a hard reset which pissed me off! But that's another story.

Anyway, now that I have an unlimited data plan with Sprint for $15 per month, I'm happy to be able to connect to the internet pretty much anywhere and anytime, without being forced to order a cup of coffee and stay couped up inside a cafe!! Nowadays, I'm connected to the internet while at work, at the beach, in the car, on the bus, in the movie theater, all over!! My favorite saying now is "I don't need no stinkin' Wi-Fi !!!"

So for the next version of the Treo, I really don't give a rat's @ss about Wi-Fi, because it's nothing but a disappointment for me. I realize that some Treo users out there don't want to pay extra for the data plan, so they are trying to save money with Wi-Fi. But I think that's really a shame to have a Treo without a data plan attached to it--what's the point??

My hopes for the next Treo are:

*4 GB (yes GigaBytes!) of internal memory
*Faster internet connection download speed
*Ability to answer phone calls while in the middle of receiving internet content (I can dream can't I?)
*1/3rd less weight, but twice the strength (more dreaming!)
*Converting PDF files internally!
*Built in USB 2.0 connection so that a desktop computer will recognize the Treo as an external drive

agreed! WiFi is overrated. I travel quite a bit across the US with my laptop - and almost everywhere you go you have to pay at least $10 or more for WiFi service - which works reasonably well only 50% of the time. After spending over $1500 this year on WiFi fees alone, I've finally come to my senses and use my Treo instead for most of my work, in spite of lower speeds.

Reapman

1) WiFi
2) Mucho improved OS (whatever that may be) over PalmOS 5
3) 128 Megs minimum
4) Full screen with sliding keyboard
5) Easier to sync with your computer (portable hard drive concept)

As for why WiFi still matters.. outside of the US, unlimited data plans are sometimes hard to comeby... Fido in Canada (who I use) USED to offer $50 for unlimited, but I can't seem to find that offer still (I still get it, tho) Other then that, Bell offers 100mb for $100 a month.

Frankly with builtin WiFi I could get some small plan and just use WiFi for a LOT less where available.

When we can get data plans for $20 in Canada that's fast enough to listen to streaming audio, I'll consider WiFi "dead"

I hope palmsource does something with the technology in their arsenal. They really need to make the interface more streamlined. They have BeOS and Linux, they can come up with something really special. BeOS technology to help with multimedia and multithreading/multitasking. Linux for filesystem and networking. Maybe a PDF based graphical interface like OSX, so we can get native PDF support. Open source it so people can update it.

In terms of hardware, I would like the form factor to stay the same. Maybe have a bigger screen for landscape mode, and come up with some intuitive way to fit a bigger keyboard.

:eek:The things I have against sliders are listed below:

(1) they still leave the screen exposed (that's a BIG no-no in my books).
(2) they still have to have a keyguard because there are buttons below the screen.
(3) they still don't solve the problem of wanting to watch a video while on a plane...you have to have someway to prop the phone up, unless you wanna hold it while watching the entire two hours.
(4) they still aren't as solid of a construction to me as hinges on a clamshell....otherwise we'd see more slider laptops.

I've been holding off on getting the 650 because it doesn't really have any significant upgrades to my beloved 600. Here's my wish list. I may be more of a realist than many on here. Most of the requests on here if implemented would cost as much as a decent laptop and weigh as much as a brick.

1. No Camera!!! Please do not waste precious space in the form factor for a camera with useless resolution. Anything less than 3 megapixels is terrible. I have my digital camera for that. At the very minimum, keep making the cameraless models for those of us not allowed to have cameras on our cell phones. (Government/Military)

2. No Wi-Fi!! Make it an add-on SD module. I don't use it on my laptop unless we're traveling and I'm in my hotel. When I'm on the road, PDANet is fast enough. That's true mobility!!!

3. I want a vibrate function I can actually feel!! My old Nokia use to scare the crap out of me.

4. 64MB of NVFS and 128MB of RAM. I don't want the slowdown from NVFS. I backup to my SD card every night. Long gone are the worries of losing data.

5. Keep the antenna the way it is. As anyone who's studied electronics and electromagnetic wave propagation theory could tell you, the bigger the antenna, the better the reception. Besides, I use mine to take it out of it's case. I'd drop it more if I didn't have it.

Time to take my wife to dinner, I'll post the rest of my list later. Happy wife, happy life!!

I heard they are shipping a lot more units this quarter than the 2nd quarter. They probably will delay the official anouncement as late as possible. I don't know about the WM5 Treo leak, but the Treo 700 leak felt like a intentional leak from Palm, just a hunch. Just to keep the fans happy.

Basically you probably can find a more technically advanced PocketPC model from a different manufacturer, but Treo should have the biggest backing from the US telcos in 2006, still. In this country this is very important. If they can roll out the next Treo on all 3 phone carriers within 3 months, I would say they do a very good job.

I don't know about T-Mobile, they seem to be busy trying to sell themselves right now.

I have been a palm user since the days of my m105, and a treo user since the T300 came out. I know own a 650, and for as much as I love this device, there are some thing about it that could be improved upon for the next revision. Although it looks like the T 670 is just about complete, it looks like it will be running windows mobile. This does not impress me, I have used pocet PC's and was never impressed with them, I do not recall a day where the thing didn't lock up on me. These improvements would make the next treo the perfect device. Well, at least in my eyes.

OS; I am "Palm 4 Life" and would like to see Cobalt on the next treo, even a linux OS would be acceptable, but a Microsoft OS has no place in a Palm device.

Form Factor; I like the size of the treo, I do wish it had a larger screen, and a hidden keyboard, I believe a slider type device would take care of this. Although it may add a little bulk to it, i could deal with a little bit thicker device if it has what I want

Expansion; I love the SD card slot, which was not present on my T 300, I would like to see another one though. Yes, that's right, two SD slots, one hidden under the battery next to the sim card slot, or next to where the sim card should be in my case, and one right where it is. It would be nice to be able to install the apps I download from Sprint to a card, to save on RAM.

Bluetooth; As of now the BT is sub-bar. When my treo is in my P6 pouch case, the reception to the BT headset is marginal at best. I usually end up putting it in my shirt pocket to prevent static. The radio could stand to be slightly more powerful.

Camera; Lose the video recording, it sucks anyways. I would much rather see a 1MP or better camera in there with a real xenon flash, rather than an LED flash. In fact, I would rather have no flash than an LED flash, it seems to turn people a light shade of blue, at least on my wifes phone it does.

Voice Features; Why is it that a 600 dollar phone does not have voice dialing, this baffles me. I like the Voicesignal product, it seems to do very well on the Samsung phones, I dont know who else uses it, but I think it should be standard on all phones, it is a safety issue. I would also like to see a voice recorder, nothing fancy, just something to allow me to record my random thoughts, and reminders when I am unable to input them by hand.

Graffiti; Need I say more. That was one feature of the PPC that I like, the "pop-up" graffiti window. A great idea, and with a larger screen, this would not take up half of the screen as it would on the Treo screen now.

Display; I love the resolution on the current display, it could stand to be less vertically challenged though. This would also allow for landscape mode to be usefull, when surfing the web, or watching a movie, that would be great.

Stylus; I have big sausage like fingers, i have learned to use the keyboard efficiently, but I still cannot cope with the stylus. Lucky for me, there is no graffiti on this device, and the 5-way nav makes my life pretty easy, but I would like to see a stylus with a litlle more girth to it.

Sound; The speaker is OK on the 650, but it could be better. Stereo sound would be clutch. The addition of a 1/8" headphone jack would be nice as well, but the 3/32" headset jack must remain as well. I would also like to see the Treo play MP3 ringtones without the addition of 3rd party software that crashes more often than not. The earpiece could use some work as well, if you own one, you know what I mean.

Network; EV-DO? Wi-Fi? I personally think that Wi-Fi would be a waste of precious real estate inside the phone. I am currently satisfied with Sprint's 3G network for what I need it for, EV-DO would be an added bonus, but it would not be a selling point for me.

Sync/Charge connector; I like the idea of a standardized connector on the palm devices, I just wish it wasn't a crappy design. Three times now i have not been able to sync due to a piece of stray pocket lint. I much prefer the modular type connector found on most cell phones, or even just a plain 'ol USB connector would do.

Push-to-Talk; This is a must, I have used both nextel, and Sprint's ready-link, I love the functionality, and would like to see it in the next device. With the Sprint-nextel merger, I would bet that it is already a consideration.

Battery; The battery in the Treo now is not bad, but I upgraded to the aftermarket Mugen battery, and love it. It would almost be necessary to upgrade the power source if all of these toys are added to the phone.

Infrared; I love IR, i just wish it was a little bit more powerful, in my line of work the ability to use the phone as a universial remote saves me alot of time and prevents me from having to carry a ton of remotes in my box.

Well, thats my rant :) , this would be my perfect treo. I have a buddy of mine working on some graphic renderings, because I cant even draw a crappy stick figure, I will try to post the drawings when he is finished.

Well, perhaps WiFi could be for non american models, like up in Canada where the only known "unlimited" data provider was Fido, for _$50_ a month, and doesn't seem to offer even that anymore. Right now I'm strongly considering an alternative phone next simple because of the small screen and lack of WiFi.

Hearing $10 from Sprint makes me sick (and a bit envious  )

The question here should be: What do you want in your Treo that probably won't make it into the next one? EV-DO will be there, more memory will be there. UMTS probably won't, wifi probably won't.

All I care about is EV-DO. They can keep the Treo exactly the way is it for all I care. :)

I think you're probably talking about something like OCR enabled technology for the integrated camera. I agree that would be cool, but I doubt current digicam tech found in smartphone can support this (maybe in Japan, Korea perhaps). Nice idea though...

Hmm...
All right, all right .....
You convinced me about clamshell.
However that will kill the one hand functionality, which is one of the biggest strength of the existing Treo's 600 & 650.
Do you mean a palm based sidekick? :eek:Umm....no sidekick; sidekick ain't a clamshell!

First of all, about one handed functionality...the only thing I use one handedly is the 5-way, right? The 5-way is what's really "one of the biggest strength of the existing Treos". I'm sure most of you use two hands for typing...and how often do you have one hand tied down? Not many....but if you're sitting down, you could rest the clamshell on a table/whatever to press the buttons on it as you can see the screen a lot better (it's a mini laptop).

And secondly....even if you do happen to have only have one hand available, you'd still be able to use a clamshell phone with that lone free hand. Pick up your Treo and hold it sideways in your hand like a widescreen clamshell....if the d-pad were in the corner of the keyboard (like the Zaurus C3100), there'd be no problem with one handedness. The ONLY time I could imagine you needing to use two hands is to open the device up to use any non-phone function....and even then, you prolly could open it with one hand, but I wouldn't recommend it as that's an awfully drop-prone method.

Also, think of this clamshell device as a smaller (slightly smaller than the 650 w/out antenna) Universal with a C3100 keyboard and an external screen/keypad like the Nokia Communicators or whatever they were called. That's my dreamphone!

i say make it thinner, ditch the camera, add EVDO and GPS. battery life, screen and keyboard are all great on the 650.

- Stability
- The ability to walk and chew gum at the same time
- Enough memory that I won't get laughed at by Windows Mobile folk

What I want is:
Bigger Screen
Bigger Keys (only if retaining Pocket-Size)
Better Color & Hi-Res Camera (only if retaining reasonable pricing)
Built-in iPOD (minimum 10G-15G capacity)
That's ALL what I want, so there.

I'd love iTunes functionality. Ditch Real Player and give us iTunes, with the ability to download songs directly onto the phone.

*Posted from my Treo 600*

Okay, so you are basically asking for more memory and different memory options. Already have the great vibrating and you seem to want no change to the current wifi situations, antenna, and no camera if you want it.

Only make wifi with an SD card if memory is bumped up to 2GB so that there's no need for SD memory cards.

How mobile can you be walking around your hotel room with a cell phone attached to your laptop? Seems like a balancing act to me. :)

If the American version lacked wifi, while the other ones had it, I'd be outraged. Wifi still means a lot unless Evdo comes out and is priced similarly to Sprint's unlimited plan - $5-10 premium maximum. If it's $80 as has been quoted (or even half that) it's not worth it for the 15 minutes a month I use it.

I think the next treo should have a swivel camera. So that the camera can face you, and you can use it as a web camera for chats.

Bluetooth that works at a decent distance...throw in version 1.2 while they're at it.
WIFI.
Decent amount of memory. 128Mb is a nice round number.
Easily removable camera. That way one could take it out for those camera banned zones.
